Attractions near Myeongdong

Seoul Tower - Located at the top of Namsan Mountain, in Namsan Park, this telecom tower and observation platform with restaurants. Opening at 10am each morning it closes at 11pm most days, but midnight on Friday and Saturday.  There are 6 dining places from burger joins to fine restaurants. And for the kids, a Teddy Bear Museum!  A 14,000 won ticket gets entry for an adult to all the facilities.  Reach the Tower, which is at the top of Namsan Mountain, via the Cable Car with breathtaking views over the city.  The lower cable car terminus is a 10 minute uphill walk from Myeongdong through interesting residential streets with a taste of local Korea.

MyeongDong NANTA Theatre - The Myeongdong Nanta Theatre has almost 400 seats arranged on two levels so that all audience can be as close to the stage. The longest running performance in Korean history this combination of mime, music, comedy and cooking is a uniquely Korean experience. A great activity for the whole family.

Bank of Korea Museum - Find out how the economy works not just in Korea but globally as well.  This large and well developed museum is free for entry and covers many different areas of monitory and economic history, theory and practice.  Open Tue through Sunday from 10am until 5pm, but closed on public holidays.

Namsangol Hanok Village -  Opened in 1998 this natural wooded part of the city has traditional houses, a crafts museum and more. Traditional village houses within Namsan Park that have been restored to show what traditional life was like before the development of the city. Also located by the village is Time Capsule Square which houses 600 artifacts from Korea to be opened in 400 years!

Seoul Plaza - This oval park was once a traffic circle but has now become a green lung of the city. Located near to Myeongdong it is worth visiting for the "Floor Water Fountain", which looks like a normal sidewalk that spurts up water very high from the ground level "floor" holes (so called ‘dancing fountain') when walked across. Various cultural events are held here during the summer, while in the winter there is an ice skating rink.

Gyeongbokgung Palace - Literally the "Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven" this historic site was first built in 1394 though has been renovated and rebuilt many times. it is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the Joseon Dynasty.

Street Food

Along the many smaller streets in the area are plenty of small stalls selling street foods, either literally in the street or from window opening up from their small shops and kiosks.  Try some of the local favorites including deep fried sausage and rice cakes on a stick, or French Fries and sausage coated in batter on a stick.   More traditional are gyeran bbang which is a type of fried egg cake or muffin which is a tasty and nutritious snack that all people can enjoy.

For those who love spicy food try dakkochi which is a spicy chicken skewer, cooked over coals to get a BBQ flavor but with plenty of chili heat as well.

Try also the hotteok which is a stuffed small pancake with a sweet sugary filling. Great warmers on a cold evening these are a popular snack with children and adults alike.
